VR Applications In The Medical World For CDC

In partnership with the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) and with support from the CDC Foundation, we have created a virtual reality application to improve the COVID-19 vaccination rates among children. The VR application is experienced using an Oculus Quest 2 headset and aims to reduce anxiety and stress associated with an injection for children receiving the vaccine. This novel technology has successfully assisted clinicals throughout Hampton Roads and is in the early stages of expanding to more clinics.

VR Rocket Preview

Through this VR video, children become part of a mission where they assist an astronaut in launching a rocket into space. As the astronaut interacts with the child in the virtual world this mimics what the doctor is doing to administer the shot. The immersive VR environment serves as a distraction, providing an engaging and distraction-free encounter while the procedure is performed thus reducing anxiety and resistance against vaccines.

VR Rock Monster Preview

This VR application immerses kids in a captivating adventure where they join a knight in protecting their village from a menacing rock monster. As the shots are administered the child receives gemstones in the virtual space that enhance their magical abilities to help defeat the monster. This VR experience helps distract and entertain kids during the vaccination process, making it a more positive and enjoyable experience.

Ad Astra Media translated this VR application into Spanish. This provided Spanish speaking communities with the same benefits from the immersive experience while receiving shots. By providing translations, we remove language barriers and make the application accessible to a wider audience. This inclusivity allows more children to engage with the virtual world, making the medical procedure less stressful and more enjoyable for them, regardless of their native language.
